Left to our own devices Mark and I are pretty dull. We do the same things over and over again. We eat at the same places over and over again. It usually takes a visitor to shake things up. A few weeks ago we took advantage of the exploring energy a visitor has and tried the new cafe at Rome's Opera house.

Run by the same team behind Marzapane, the Caffe del'Opera is open from early in the morning with cappuccino and pastries from Roscioli until late for a post-show nibble. We went for lunch on a sunny winter afternoon on our way to a matinee. The clean-lined mid-century space is spacious if a little cool edged. We ordered glasses of crisp white wine and tried to choose from the varied and creative menu offerings.

Mark ordered polpette di bollito, which are deep-fried shreds of beef stew, served elegantly in a row. I had a thin, crisp toast with burrata, roasted tomatoes, and rounds of red onion. The burrata topped red prawn tower was fresh and a wonderful balance of sea-tinged brine and creamy buffalo milk cheese.

This is a perfect spot for an early cappuccino, an elegant lunch or a glass of prosecco and a plate of snacks before the opera.
