That said things do quiet down and places are closed for at least part of the month. Here is a roundup of lists of where to eat, find a dentist, get your hair cut and see a movie in Rome in August.
The CNA Roma (Confederazione Nazionale dell'Artigianato e della Piccola e Media Impresa di Roma) has compiled a list (in Italian) of small business services available in August from mechanics to plumbers to hairdressers to bakeries.
Where to Eat in Rome in August
Romewise is written by Elyssa, the owner of the very chic Daphne Inn. She has compiled a really terrific resource for all things Rome and her August openings page is thorough and very useful.Puntarelle Rossa's list is in Italian, but very easy to decipher even if you are not an Italian speaker.
Tavole Romane compiled this extensive list of 2018 August restaurant openings.
Dentists and Pharmacies
It sometimes seems like mishaps are just waiting to happen at the most inopportune time. Your teenagers brace wire pops out on August 10 or you get a brutal headache and only realize you are out of Motrin (called Moment in Italian) on a Sunday. At 10:00 pm.
The website Dentista Agosto has a list of all the dentists in Rome working in August.
To find a pharmacy open at any hour this site FederFarmaRoma lists them by hour and neighborhood. (one's with defibrillators are noted as well)
Cinema
There are still movies being screened inside theaters and for an under the stars experience you can head to the Isola Tiberina (where there are a few films in original language - look for V.O. in the listing) as part of the summer Lungotevere summer festivities. Piazza Vittorio is the place for street food and film until September. for the summer. Also check the city of Rome's Estate Romana for a list of events (music, dance, theater.)The always information packed site In Rome Now has updated listings.
