It's that time of year again and Rome is again struggling with a Christmas tree disaster

All jokes aside, I have spent the last year really trying to shop small. From my grocery shopping to vacationing close to home I have worked to spend my money in places owned and operated by individuals and families instead of corporations. In that spirit here are a few gift ideas that support artists and small businesses.

In the middle of Noah's college graduation day festivities this past May in Boston, I somehow managed to squeeze in a visit to the studio's of longtime Instagram pals Gabrielle Schaffner and Laura Davidson

Gabrielle handcrafts ceramic plate, bowls, cups and trays, many with Italophile favorites like Moka's and Etruscan urns. Her production runs are small and her work sells out fast. Sign up for her email newsletter so you are first in the know.

Laura creates tiny and intricate worlds in paper. Staying with a theme here, I adore her tiny book with illustrations of the Iconic Moka coffee pot.

I didn't spend nearly enough time in Venice this year. To make up for it I had my favorite jeweler there make me a pair of earrings the color of the lagoon. Now I have a piece of Venice with me every day, which is the next best thing. The Jovon brothers can make you a customized special piece too

You should probably just go ahead and buy a few actual Bialetti Moka pots and help keep the company solvent
