Autumn Entertainment {Gillian's List of Links}

Rome Stormy Skies

While my general world view is pretty sunny, my default entertainment choice skews dark. I have a few friends that never. ever. let me pick the movie.

Here are a few things I am listening to and watching right now that are perfect for the shorter days and rainy nights of late autumn.

Serial

I have been an avid This American Life fan since I moved to Rome. I listen religiously every week and I contribute every year. The new venture that everyone is talking about, called Serial, is my new podcast obsession.

Olive Kitteridge

New England is as foreign to me as Africa was twenty years ago. After just a few days on Cape Cod this past summer Mark and I have fallen in love with it's simple beauty and straightforward charm. This four part mini-series that is an adaptation of a vivid book is cultural research.

The Affair

This is a dark and twisty tale set in idyllic Montauk. I love the unreliable narrators, the complicated narrative structure and the smart soapy plot. And that haunting opening song.

  1. Gillian, thank you for the youtube link to Olive Kitteridge. I'd heard about it, but I'd not seen a trailer before. How are you watching it in Italy? If you haven't read the book, I would highly recommend it. I read it a couple of years ago and it remains one of my favourite books of all time. The writing is so good that I remember stopping and rereading the first few pages because the writing literally took my breath away. It appears that the HBO series is very true to the book. And as for Serial, I too am completely hooked. Can't wait to go for a walk on Thursdays to listen to the next installment. Oh, that's tomorrow. Yippee!
