Beer in Rome {L'Antica Birreria Peroni}

We had a lot of visitors this summer. A great thing about having visitors is that they notice different things than I do.  I have probably walked past great places a thousand times with a blind eye.  One of our summer visitors noticed just one of these places as we were taking a short cut from the Monti neighborhood to the Fontana di Trevi.  This visiting beer lover literally stopped in his tracks and asked "what is this place?"

This place was the L'Antica Birreria Peroni,  located just around the corner from Piazza Venezia.  Originally a horse stable and once a place of religious miracles, this spot has been serving cold beer and hearty food since 1906.
Seated in the beautiful art nouveau dining room, we ordered grilled steaks and pork chops with sides of beans. The plates of shrimp risotto at the table next to us looked very good too. They must have been, it was sold out when we tried to order it.

The highlights of the menu are the four beers on tap and five different types of sausages.

With September here and cooler weather on it's way, I am sure we will be heading here soon for a hearty plate of German-style sausage and cold draft beer.

  1. I love this place! The room is lovely and so cosy a rarity in Rome. It was a welcome break from the driving rain when my aunt and cousin were visiting last year. I wouldn't recommend ordering the sausage if you are a woman though, it arrives somewhat aroused ...

  3. I second the warning about the sausage, although I found it pretty funny (I wasn't the recipient so maybe that helped?)! This place is great.
