Food and Ghost Tour in Venice with Monica Cesarato

This past summer when I went to Venice on my art filled trip I left the rest of my family behind.  The entire time I was there I wished that they were there with me. I saw so many things that I knew they would love as much as I did.  The 55th Venice Biennale ends on the 24th of November. In spite of work and college application deadlines and a nationwide transportation strike, we hopped a fast train and headed north for a few days.

All the art and meals were planned out, but it was Mark's first visit to Venice and the last time the Teenager was in Venice, he was 5 years old.  We needed a little bit of something touristy.  I have chatted with Monica Cesarato for years on Twitter and Facebook, and had read all about her food and ghost tours of Venice.  I have recommended them to friends and travelers. Now I finally had the chance to go on one myself.

Starting at the Piazzale Roma and winding through Venice's ghetto, the sestiere Cannareggio and ending up at the Rialto Bridge, we spent a most entertaining, delicious and relaxing evening.  We heard ghoulish Venetian legends and saw parts of the city we would never have discovered on our own.  Best of all there were plenty of stops for wine and snacks.  Monica made sure our plates were filled with the best of Venetian cichetti like creamy bacala mantecato, sharp sarde in soar and crispy fried treats.  We washed it all down with a pleasantly bitter Venetian spritz and a variety of local wines.

I can not tell you enough times how wonderful it is to have someone else navigating the tiny calle of Venice for you and knowing exactly where to eat and taking care of all of the ordering. If you are visiting Venice, book a tour with Monica. You will be so happy that you did.  Listening to ghost tales while the sun sets over the canal on a cool October night, what could be better than that?  Not much.

  1. I am seriously thinking about doing this! And I never ever do tours. But, ghosts AND wine? As a former Goth (yep), it doesn't get much better than that...
