Pizza in Rome

In the quiet days of August we stayed in Rome and enjoyed the somewhat calmer pace of this chaotic city. Mark's days at the office were shorter, Noah's friends had almost all left to start their first year at university. It is a time of year when the evening light lingers and a long walk to dinner through the center is a relaxing activity. We took advantage of the somnolence and tried a few of the new places that had opened recently in town. One of these newcomers is Emma Pizzeria.

Emma is a new venture by Pierluigi Roscioli in what is turning into a delicious crossroads just around the corner from Campo di Fiori. In contrast to some of my rustic go-to spots, Emma is very designed. A glass roof in the middle of the dining room, bright, clean-lined, red chairs, and contemporary art mix well with the exposed brick of the Roman era walls.

High-quality ingredients, including my favorite Casa Barone tomatoes and buffala mozzarella from Paestum top a thin, crunchy crust. There is Menabrea beer on tap and an interesting collection served in bottles. We split a very rich tiramisu that was bold with freshly brewed espresso and a crunch of almonds and pistachios.

The days are getting shorter and the house is emptier, which just means more room for pizza-filled evenings.

  1. I love big cities in the height of summer -- New York, Paris, London...there's such a wonderful feeling of ownership that comes with the empty streets. This pizza looks wonderful -- would love to.sink my teeth into a slice right now!
