Florence is probably better known as the place for gourmet panini than Rome is, but there are some pretty good sandwiches to be found here in the eternal city. Here are my picks for the best panini in Rome.

You don't have to go all the way to Florence to try the most famous of the Renaissance city's panini. On the ground floor of Eataly is the Roman outpost of Ino.  There are vegetarian and vegan options and often special events centered around a specific sandwich. Go hungry. The portions are American style, I often split one with the Teenager.

This is the best baloney sandwich you will ever have. When I don't know what to eat, or worse, I have waited to long to eat, the most classic of Roman street food, Pizza Mortadella, comes to my rescue. My favorite comes from the Antica Forno di Campo di Fiori and tastes best if sitting on the long travertine bench in the Piazza Farnese.

Gaudeo

Update June 2014 - The management of Gaudeo has changed and the quality of the ingredients has slipped.

Are you trying to avoid wheat?  You can still have a sandwich if you come to Gaudeo in Monti.  Kamut bread from Roscioli and an extensive choice of quality ingredients are what you will find here.  Fresh mozzarella braids from Paestum, sweet, salty proscuitto di Parma, and sun dried tomatoes are some of the traditional fillings.  The most luxurious is Puglian sea urchin with burrata and Amalfi lemon strips.  They offer delivery and catering services.

This pick is a DIY sandwich.  The ladies who sell porchetta at the weekend farmers market near the Circo Massimo make my favorite porchetta in the region.  Buy a slice or two, salty and herby with plenty of crunchy crackling and then find the bread, usually at the entrance across from the flowers and plants and buy some pizza bianca.  Grab cold Birra del Borgo beer and sit in the courtyard in the back where there are tables and chairs set up picnic table style.

Sunday 9:00-16:00

Tiny sandwiches on classic Roman rosetta rolls with creative fillings. I am currently obsessed with the ricotta, sun dried tomato and zucchini flower. There are also very healthy smoothies made to order.  AND they deliver!

  1. Oh, my, I am drooling over that pizza mortadella. How have I missed this on previous visits to Rome? Wonderful list -- thank you!
